AI assistants: ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Perplexity

Start with the work you repeat

A daily assistant earns its place by handling recurring tasks with less correction. Make a list of what you actually do: summarize documents, draft replies, investigate a question, or turn an idea into a visual. Then identify which tasks need connected business information. A capable response in a fresh chat does not tell you whether the tool will fit permissions, handoff, or review inside a team. Consumer subscriptions and business accounts should be evaluated separately.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT brings writing, file analysis, web search, and image creation into a conversational workspace. That combination makes it a reasonable starting point when tasks change throughout the day. Try a small sequence rather than one prompt: explain a document, draft a response, then revise it after a correction. Check whether the output follows the source and preserves your constraints. Access limits depend on the plan, and a chat subscription is separate from API billing.

Claude

Claude is relevant when your work involves reviewing source material and developing a document across several iterations. Its project-oriented workflow is worth evaluating with a brief, supporting files, and a set of editorial instructions. Ask it to preserve distinctions that matter to the reader instead of simply shortening everything. Assess how much correction is needed when instructions conflict. Treat Claude Code as a separate development workflow; this comparison concerns the general assistant.

Gemini

Gemini combines a general assistant with research and connections to Google apps. Include it when the practical question is how AI fits work already happening in the Google ecosystem. Verify the exact account, region, and subscription used for the trial: a feature shown on a consumer product page may have different availability in a managed organization. Evaluate both the answer and whether the needed information is accessible under the right permissions.

Perplexity

Perplexity is a useful candidate for people who begin with a question and want to explore linked material. Its search-led presentation can make the next reading step clearer. A citation is a starting point for verification, however, not a guarantee that every sentence is supported. Open a sample of the references, check publication dates, and distinguish a direct source from commentary. Compare the effort needed to turn a response into a defensible research note.

Run a one-week comparison

Give all four assistants the same three non-sensitive tasks and the same reference material. Record factual corrections, instruction misses, useful source links, and the effort to finish the work. Include a task where the supplied evidence does not answer the question: the tool should expose the gap. Keep the smallest subscription set that covers your recurring needs. There is little value in paying for overlapping capabilities you never use.
