A specialist decision within acoustic monitoring

Ultrasonic bat surveys need species coverage, recording context and reviewable call evidence. This differs from general soundscape dashboards or bird-recording apps. SonoBat 30, ecoObs bcAdmin4 and BatDetect2 all support automated bat analysis, but package the work as a desktop suite, a survey database, or a research toolkit. Their profiles carry current commercial terms.

SonoBat 30

SonoBat 30 connects call interpretation with the practical work around a survey. It displays full-spectrum recordings, processes batches, assigns regional classifications and supports manual vetting before reports leave the desktop. Data Wizard handles recording metadata and related utilities, while LIVE adds a real-time recording and viewing route. For consultants, that means identification results can remain connected to a familiar visual review process instead of becoming a separate spreadsheet of unexplained labels.

Edition selection is central. North America includes regional species classifiers, and the UK edition addresses a different fauna. Universal provides measurements and manual identification tools without equivalent species-level automatic classification. The manufacturer describes a quantitative classification approach that also uses machine learning at particular decision steps, rather than treating the whole product as an image-only neural classifier. SonoBat is a strong fit for people buying an integrated analysis environment for a supported region. Its free Viewer supports inspection of recordings, not the complete paid identification workflow.

ecoObs bcAdmin4

ecoObs bcAdmin4 treats acoustic survey organization as part of the identification problem. It stores recording references, sessions and associated metadata in databases. A session can represent a detector night, letting analysts work across repeated deployments without losing the connection between a call and its location or conditions. Automatic call measurement feeds the identification process, and the released CoreML classifier provides the current machine-learning route. Previews and review controls keep individual evidence accessible.

The reporting strengths are especially relevant when activity must be related to environmental conditions. Analysts can examine time patterns, species summaries and relationships with wind or temperature inside the same application. bcAdmin4 accepts compatible recordings from other real-time detectors as well as batcorder data, although the vendor explains that detector sensitivity and recording quality affect measurements. It suits teams repeatedly handling structured field campaigns. The hardware-linked pricing and macOS requirements make it a different purchase from a general-purpose cross-platform sound editor or a standalone free classifier demo.

BatDetect2

BatDetect2 exposes the underlying detection and classification work to researchers. A model marks individual calls within high-frequency recordings and predicts their classes. The accompanying Python tools support command-line processing, integration into scripts, training and evaluation. The default model is trained on UK data, so its existence does not establish a classifier for every bat fauna. A team with its own annotations can instead work toward a model matched to its material.

That flexibility is the main attraction. Detection outputs can become inputs to a wider research pipeline rather than remain inside a proprietary desktop database. The project also documents adapting and evaluating models, and provides demonstrations for exploration. The current repository announces 2.0.0b3 as a beta with revised workflows and a refreshed model, which matters for reproducibility across software versions. Its CC BY-NC 4.0 license is another material boundary: no-cost research access does not automatically authorize commercial consultancy use. BatDetect2 fits technically capable teams willing to own that integration.

Regional coverage comes before interface preference

SonoBat makes geography visible through separate North American and UK classifier offerings. bcAdmin4 links identification to its supported call libraries and survey workflow. BatDetect2 supplies a UK-trained default and tools for custom development. These choices cannot be reduced to three interchangeable species counters. A project outside a supported fauna needs evidence of relevant coverage, and ambiguous calls may remain ambiguous after automated analysis. SonoBat and bcAdmin4 provide analyst-facing review environments; BatDetect2 offers more control over how models and output review are assembled.

Reports, context and customization

Choose SonoBat when visual vetting, recording utilities and regional reports are the core deliverable. Choose bcAdmin4 when the repeated detector session and its environmental context organize the work. BatDetect2 is more compelling when a team wants per-call predictions inside code, custom training or explicit evaluation of a new model. The difference is where the analyst spends time: inside an integrated review suite, inside a structured survey database, or constructing a reproducible research workflow around model outputs.

Licensing changes the practical shortlist

SonoBat offers a perpetual North American license and a four-year lease-to-own route. bcAdmin4 publishes annual update-license prices that differ sharply with qualifying recorder ownership. Its German terms allow continued use of the last version after updates end. BatDetect2 avoids a stated software subscription but restricts commercial use through its license. Free SonoBat Viewer, a separate ecoObs classifier viewer and BatDetect2 are therefore different propositions. Hardware, regional classifiers, update access and permitted use matter more than comparing a single headline price.

Choose around the survey deliverable

SonoBat 30 suits a supported-region desktop identification and vetting workflow. bcAdmin4 suits detector-session reporting and environmental analysis. BatDetect2 suits adaptable research pipelines with suitable technical skills and licensing. Automated labels remain evidence for expert interpretation, particularly where overlapping call types affect species confidence.
