A document translator or a localization workspace?

Translating a customer email is a different job from maintaining an application in several languages. DeepL, Smartcat, and Lokalise overlap in AI translation, but the surrounding workflow changes the buying decision. DeepL offers a direct language tool; Smartcat and Lokalise add more structure around content, terminology, collaboration, and repeated updates.

DeepL

DeepL is the most direct starting point for someone who wants to translate text or a document and continue working. Its translator supports pasted text and document uploads, with formatting preservation designed to reduce the amount of rebuilding afterwards. Glossaries help maintain terminology, and Pro offers formality controls for supported languages. Desktop and mobile apps, browser access, and workplace integrations put translation near everyday writing tasks. There is also a separate API for teams building translation into their own systems. Our view is that DeepL fits individual contributors and business teams particularly well when a translated file or message is the desired result. Product choice still matters: document allowances, glossary capacity, and API access should not be assumed to be identical across subscriptions.

Smartcat

Smartcat organizes translation as shared content work. It can route a project through different translation engines and language models, apply the team’s terminology, reuse reviewed translations, and bring review into the same environment. Its scope includes documents and other business content such as courses, websites, and audiovisual material. The central store of approved wording is useful when marketing, training, and external reviewers all need to follow the same language choices. Our assessment is that Smartcat makes more sense than a simple translation box when content changes hands before publication. The current packages also distinguish basic translation from reviewer, marketplace, and more advanced automation capabilities. A team should choose the workflow it needs instead of assuming every feature shown across the platform belongs to the entry plan.

Lokalise

Lokalise places AI inside a translation-management workflow that is especially relevant to software and digital products. Translators can work with shared terminology and previous translations, while contextual material such as screenshots and metadata helps explain what a short piece of interface text means. AI features use those assets and can route work across models, with scoring and review controls available within the platform’s offering. Content integrations and collaborative tasks connect translation with an ongoing release process. This makes Lokalise a good candidate when a team repeatedly changes app screens, website content, or product messages. The additional structure is less compelling for an occasional standalone document. Hosted content, translated words, seats, and automation capabilities also create several dimensions to the plan comparison.

DeepL versus Smartcat for everyday content

DeepL has the shorter conceptual route for a person translating a presentation or email: bring in the text, adjust the wording, and take away the result. Smartcat is more useful when the same content needs shared terminology, review, and coordination across people or departments. DeepL’s glossary controls can support consistency, but that is not the same buying decision as selecting an environment for distributing and reviewing content work. For a small team handling occasional documents, DeepL is the more focused starting point. For recurring multilingual training or marketing projects, Smartcat’s workflow and reusable translation assets give the comparison more substance than engine choice alone.

Smartcat versus Lokalise for ongoing localization

Both Smartcat and Lokalise use approved terminology and past translations to guide new work. Smartcat presents a broad content-production scope, with different file types, engines, and reviewer options. Lokalise makes a particularly strong case when translation follows a digital product through repeated releases and short strings need screen context. A course and a mobile interface may both require translation, yet their handoffs differ: the course is often handled as a content project, while interface wording returns with product updates. Our editorial preference is Smartcat for the former emphasis and Lokalise for the latter, while recognizing that both platforms cover overlapping use cases.

How their pricing models compare

DeepL has a free translator and paid Pro options; a reliable local Pro amount was not available during this check. Smartcat Adapt starts at $1,200 billed annually, with a defined Smartwords allowance and unlimited users. Lokalise Explorer displayed $149 per month with yearly billing selected. These are different commitments and capacity models. Smartcat’s annual price should not be read as a monthly charge, and Lokalise’s hosted-word capacity should not be confused with its AI translation allowance. Smartcat and Lokalise advertise trials rather than an ongoing free production tier on these pages.

Which should you choose?

Choose DeepL for direct document and communication tasks, Smartcat for coordinated multilingual content, and Lokalise for localization that travels with product development. There is no defensible universal translation-quality winner across every language and subject from the documentation alone. The clearer decision is which product gives the people doing the work the right context and handoff.
