AI research tools: Perplexity vs ChatGPT vs Gemini
A comparison for people building research briefs, checking claims, and following sources. The central question is whether you can inspect the evidence behind the answer.
Our take
Perplexity is a search-led starting point; ChatGPT combines research with file analysis and drafting; Gemini brings Deep Research into Google’s assistant. Evaluate source quality with the same question and cutoff date.

| Tool | Best fit | Main strengths | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | Researchers who want a starting point for finding and checking sources. | Source citations · File analysis · Model selection on Pro | A citation does not guarantee an accurate answer. |
| ChatGPT | People who switch between research, writing, and visual tasks. | Web search · File analysis · Image generation | Access and usage limits depend on plan. |
| Gemini | People whose daily work already lives in Google apps. | Deep Research · Image generation · Connected Google apps | Features and access vary by account, region, and subscription. |

Choose evidence before presentation
A convincing summary can conceal weak support. Define what counts as an acceptable reference before testing a research assistant: an original announcement, a vendor document, a paper, or a primary dataset. Separate discovery from verification. An assistant may help find material while a person still needs to confirm whether the material supports the exact claim. This comparison concerns research workflow, not guaranteed factual accuracy.
Perplexity
Perplexity makes linked information central to its answer experience. Include it when you need an initial map of a topic and a set of pages to inspect. Try questions with several competing explanations and see whether the response preserves that uncertainty. Follow references through to the original publisher. When a secondary article repeats another source, count the underlying evidence once rather than treating repetition as independent confirmation.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT can combine web research with analysis of supplied files and the drafting of a final brief. That combination is useful when the deliverable depends on both external material and documents you already have. Ask it to distinguish statements supported by your files from statements found elsewhere. Keep the reference material available for review. Check which research capabilities and allowances are included in the intended account.
Gemini
Gemini documents Deep Research alongside its broader assistant features. It is a candidate when research is part of a Google-centered workflow. Test whether the resulting report makes it straightforward to inspect individual claims, and check account-specific access before relying on connected material. For any assistant, a longer report is not necessarily a better one. Useful uncertainty and a clear explanation of missing evidence matter more than length.
A practical source audit
Create a ten-claim brief with a mix of stable facts, recent announcements, and questions with incomplete answers. For each assistant, record the cited page, publication date, relevant supporting passage, and any unsupported inference. Include a misleading secondary source in the exercise. The evaluation should reward identifying the problem, not confidently incorporating it. Repeat the audit after a meaningful product change.
From research to a usable brief
Keep a short evidence ledger beside the draft. Mark what is established, disputed, and unknown, and state the date of the review. Ask a colleague to reconstruct two conclusions using only the linked material. If they cannot, improve the citations before publishing. Choose the assistant that reduces this verification work for your actual subject area; this is an editorial evaluation framework, not a measured ranking.
